Description
Take a kids on a road trip to St. John Parish on Christmas Eve to experience the centuries old tradition of lighting bonfires on the levees. Some say the tradition started to light the way for people attending Christmas Eve mass. Others believe it was our way of directing Papa Nola, or Santa Claus, on his annual journey. Either way, the bonfires are something every New Orleans family should experience together at least once.

Just show up. Take Louisiana 3213 to Louisiana 44 (River Road), exit before the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Gramercy. This will lead to the first bonfires along the levee, and then individuals may drive along River Road through Gramercy, Lutcher and Paulina. Turn around and head east on River Road to catch the structures in St. John Parish. Expect heavy traffic by the levees.
