My Family's Adventure Aboard the Titanic

An Immersive Voyage in New Orleans

By Betsy Winters, Macaroni Kid New Orleans Social Media Manager May 29, 2025

When your child becomes fascinated by something, there’s nothing more fulfilling than finding the perfect way to nurture that interest.

For our family, it’s currently the Titanic, “the unsinkable ship.” My 7-year-old recently became completely captivated by the story. He’s been reading books (This is his favorite), watching documentaries, sketching ship diagrams on scraps of paper, and even playing a Titanic-themed Roblox game. My 7-year-old also watched the entire Titanic movie (I fast-forwarded through one part, IYKYK). When I discovered that Titanic: An Immersive Voyage was now open in New Orleans, I knew we had to go!

And I’m so glad we went.

Our entire family, my husband and I, along with our three kids (ages 9, 7, and 3) visited the Titanic experience at the Scottish Rite Temple on Carondelet Street, and it was epic. The historic venue, with its grand Ionic columns, instantly transported us back in time, and I wasn’t expecting that. The experience begins before you even walk inside.

Because it’s New Orleans, we had to navigate around the largest pothole I’ve ever seen to reach the entrance, but once inside, the magic began. The experience is well laid out, featuring several hallways, elegant ship corridors, massive projection screens, and dramatic reenactments, which make it feel as if we are walking the decks of the Titanic. I appreciated how well-lit photographs accompany written information, it made learning fun for my new readers. It was immersive in the best possible way: emotional, informative, and beautifully designed.

But the most powerful part? Watching all three of my children in awe.

My 7-year-old asked questions nonstop, pointed out familiar details from his books, and soaked in every artifact and story with complete fascination. It was like watching him put together everything he’s read or watched about the Titanic so far..

Our 9-year-old was drawn to the audio tour, listening closely to the history of the Titanic, while our toddler was happy to discover what was around every corner and take it all in with wide-eyed excitement. There truly was something for every age.

As a parent, giving your child a meaningful connection to something they love and enjoying it together as a family is incredibly special. It’s an experience I’ll always treasure.

Since I have little kids, we opted out of the Virtual Reality experience. For visitors ages 7 and up, there’s also an optional (added cost) VR experience. It allows you to virtually explore parts of the ship and is ideal for older kids and adults who want to dive deeper into the story.
