Ogden Museum of Southern Art invites the community to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a free family day presented by COX. The day features FREE admission for all and provides a range of environmentally-focused art activities, a museum-wide scavenger hunt, family-friendly entertainment, community partner tables, a food truck and more! Join us for a fun-filled day of learning and exploring while celebrating our planet and our community.
The featured exhibition, entitled, Story Quilts: A Conservation Collaboration, showcases artwork created during the Artist and Sense of Place Residency program with students from Young Audiences Charter Schools and artist Gina Phillips. The collaborative project, supported by COX, explores sense of place and the importance of recycling.
“COX, as a company, is well on our way to zero waste to landfill by 2024. We are excited about supporting an event that educates our community about how they can make a measurable environmental difference,” says Kevin Monroe, COX’s New Orleans Market Vice President.
To create the exhibit pieces for Story Quilts: A Conservation Collaboration, students created imagery investigating their place within their school, the environment and their home. The students’ drawings were enlarged, colored and collaged with oil pastels and recycled materials. Young artists also collaborated on a quilt created with recycled fabrics, in the signature style of Gina Phillips. At the culmination of the residency, the exhibition will be on view in the Education Gallery on the Museum’s third floor.
Guests of all ages are invited to explore the Museum and enjoy:
•environmentally-based art activities
•a museum-wide scavenger hunt and
•family-friendly entertainment by School of Rock and Make Music NOLA.
•Community partners such as KidsmART and BikeEasy will be onsite to provide resources and opportunities for learning and play.
•Food will be available for purchase from Tanjarine Kitchen.
“Fostering environmental stewardship in the youth of the Greater New Orleans area is particularly important for our region, which is one of the most biodiverse in the nation. Through the support of COX, Ogden Museum hosts Free Family Day as a fun, family-friendly introduction to environmental conservation,” says Michelle Pontiff, Education Manager.
