Operation Spark, a non-profit coding bootcamp that provides training in software development for adults and youth across Louisiana, is offering Fall High School Coding Classes for students in Grades 10-12. Courses will begin the week of August 23 and end in December, with both in-person and virtual options offered. In-person classes (following state and local COVID safety guidelines) at Operation Spark’s new Bywater campus at 514 Franklin Avenue, are held once a week from 4:30-pm to 8:00pm. Alternatively, students can learn virtually from home twice weekly from 4:30-6:30pm.. Applicants are encouraged to apply soon to ensure a spot. To register, go to: bit.ly/opsparkafterschool.
“We believe that every high school student should be exposed to the fundamental concepts and skills of software development,” said Operation Spark CEO John Fraboni. “Through our courses, students will learn invaluable skills such as tech literacy, problem-solving, creativity and professional collaboration, while building a portfolio of websites, mobile apps, and video game projects.”
Two levels of courses will be offered. Students new to coding can enroll in the Fundamentals of HTML, CSS and Javascript, earning 1 Carnegie Credit and a Basic Industry Based Credential (IBC). There is no prerequisite for this course. Students who have completed Operation Spark’s Fundamentals course can enroll in Advanced Javascript, Functional Programming and Web Development, earning 1 Carnegie Credit plus an Advanced IBC.
There are a limited number of tuition-free spots available for public and parochial school students who attend Operation Spark partner schools; students who attend non-partner schools are eligible for tuition discounts.
To attend virtually, students need a laptop, desktop, or Chromebook, a working mic and webcam, and a reliable internet connection.
