This Week's Info for Covid Testing ~ Greater New Orleans Area

By Nicole Provosty December 31, 2020

FREE WALGREENS TESTING throughout Louisiana

The Louisiana Department of Health and Walgreens are partnering to provide COVID-19 testing by appointment at select Walgreens locations. These sites more than double the available 7-days-a-week testing locations for people to receive a test. LDH-Walgreens locations offer COVID-19 testing at no cost to the patient, though insurance information may be requested. You will not be billed if your insurance denies coverage.

Testing is available to people ages 3 and older. Appointments are required; make yours at walgreens.com/covid19testing. Bring your personal ID to your appointment, as well as insurance information if you have it. Test results are available within 72 hours of test collection: by email if negative, or by email and a phone call if positive.

FREE JEFFERSON PARISH TESTING

ALARIO CENTER in Westwego

Monday - Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Testing has moved to the south side of the Alario Center near Segnette Field.

Testing at the Alario Center is available to individuals five years and older who want to know their COVID-19 status. Individuals under 16 years old must have a parent or legal guardian present to consent to testing.

Register in-person or online at Health.QuestDiagnostics.com/STLOU. Click here to learn how to get your results.

This testing site will be conducted as a drive-thru test site. Once on site, those being tested will need to do as followed:
• Wear a mask and stay in vehicle (there will be separate lines for those who have pre-registered and for those who must register onsite).
• The site will use a self-administered nasal swab test that will allow those being tested to swab their own nose while in their vehicles. Each person will be observed by a trained medical volunteer to ensure the sample is taken correctly, and drop the sealed sampled into a container on their way out of the drive-thru site.

•University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena. I took my son to get a test here on Monday, January 11, 2021, as he needed a test to return to college. We had an appointment for 11:30 a.m. that we made online. This is not necessary to do. It just means you go in a different line basically and that they have your paperwork when you arrive. The whole testing process took less than 20 minutes for us. However, my friend went right after lunch the week prior and said she had to wait an hour. She thinks it's because the workers were still returning from lunch. Anyway, you stay in your car the whole time. When we drove up, there were two army men that were checking people in. After that, you drive to the next area, where they hand you your test packet. Then you drive to the next station where an army guy gives you instructions. It is a self administered test that they hand you in a plastic bag. He told my son to open the packaging that holds the swab. You have to peel apart the paper and that was actually a little difficult if you don't have nails! Then he told my son to break the swab handle in half and then stick the swab up your nose (both nostrils) and twist it around 5 times "like you are stirring a pot of gumbo!" Put the swab in the little tube, put the cap on, put it back in the plastic bag that has your name of in it, hand it back and that's it. You are supposed to get your results back within 3 - 5 days via email or phone. We chose email and he got the results back Thursday, January 14, 2021.
