Family Fun at New Orleans City Park

March 16, 2017

City Park is such a wonderful place for families. It truly is a New Orleans treasure. Here are two facts about City Park that are pretty remarkable:

1) It is home to the world’s largest stand of mature live oaks. The world? Pretty cool, huh?

2) One of the oak tree dates dates back nearly 800 years. Wow. That's noteworthy.

Besides simply taking a walk in City Park and soaking in all it's magestic beauty, the park offers much more for family entertainment. A great place to start is the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park. It recently opened on March 4 for the season, so if you haven't already visited, make a plan to go soon! It's always a treat to stop by the park's Morning Call for beignets too! Did you know it's open 24 hours? And it's cash only.

CAROUSEL GARDENS AMUSEMENT PARK

This spring, the amusement park makes for a fun weekend outing with the kids. It's open now through May 28 - Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 6pm. The Ladybug Roller Coaster, Tilt-a-Whirl, Musik Express, Bumper Cars, Slime Buckets, Wacky Shack and Ferris Wheel, plus many more, will have your kids thoroughly entertained. There are height requirements for most rides so be sure to warn your children ahead of time to avoid disappointment. Click here for more information.

TRAIN and CAROUSEL RIDES

For the little ones, a ride on the train and carousel is a thrilling adventure. Daily train and carousel rides are happening now. The train ride is 15 minutes and wraps around the front of the Park. A Carousel ride lasts about 5 minutes. Enter through the Tolmas Center Visitor Center (5 Victory Avenue). Pay the admission fee to Storyland ($4) and then $4 per person per ride. Children who can sit on their parent's lap (children under 36") do not need their own ticket if with a paid adult. The Train and Carousel will be operating daily. Both will run every half hour, starting at 11am: 11, 11:30, 12, 1, 1:30, 2, 2:30, 3, 3:30, 4, 4:30.

Did you know for more than 100 years, visitors have enjoyed The Carousel  – a beauty featuring “flying horses” and one of only 100 such carousels in the country. The Carousel is the masterwork of famed carvers Loof and Carmel, and has drawn praise from the National Historic Preservation Society. The Carousel is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Click here for more information.

STORYLAND

Featuring 20 larger-than-life storybook sculptures, Storyland is great fun for the little ones. Fairytales and fantasy come to life before your eyes in City Park’s Storyland. Kids can climb aboard Captain Hook’s pirate ship, follow Pinocchio into the mouth of a whale or scamper up Jack & Jill’s Hill!  This charming theme playground is a child’s dream (come true!).
