There's No Wrong Way to Eat a Chocolate Covered Cricket!
Buzz down to Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium for Chocolate Covered Insect Day on Sunday, October 14, 2012, 10am - 5pm.

On Friday, October 14, visitors to Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will enjoy sugary surprises created by executive bug chefs to celebrate Chocolate Covered Insect Day. Guests will be able to dip edible critters in a fountain overflowing with rich melted chocolate.
“We’re happy we can offer this unique opportunity to guests,” says Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium Director of Animals and Visitor Programs Jayme Necaise. “People may not realize this, but the FDA allows 60 or more microscopic insect fragments for each 100 grams of chocolate – so it’s not a huge leap to just go ahead and add the whole bug! Besides, bugs are good for you – they are surprisingly nutritious and a major food source for many people across the globe.”
Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium celebrates National Chocolate Insect Day annually but this year is extra special. In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month, visitors are invited to dip their edible insect in pink chocolate in support of the many families affected by the disease and will also be able to view a display of rare pink katydids in the lobby.
Bug Appétit is located in the back of Tiny Termite Café at Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. It offers visitors a chance to taste insect cuisine in many forms – from chocolate “chirp” cookies to six-legged salsa and crispy cajun crickets. Visitors searching for more traditional fare will find it in Tiny Termite Café as well – minus the six-legged ingredients, of course.
The tastings are included with regular Insectarium admission (while supplies last).
Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium
Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium prices are $16.00 for adults, $13.00 for seniors and $11.00 for children and free for Audubon Nature Institute members. Advanced tickets are recommended and can be purchased by visiting AudubonInstitute.org or at any Audubon Nature Institute attraction. Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is located at 423 Canal Street in downtown New Orleans in the U.S. Custom House and is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday.
