8 Things to Do in New Orleans this Weekend with Your Kids

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 22

Family Workshop: Navy School at the WWII Museum
Where: Louisiana Memorial Pavilion 
When: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM 
Who: Workshops are designed for children ages 8 – 12. 1 adult per 3 kids must attend. 
How: Advance ticket purchased is required. Register safely and securely online now. 
Cost: Cost: $9 per child, free for Museum members. Regular Museum admission applies for families who wish to spend the day at the Museum.

Whether in the Atlantic or the Pacific, it was the US Navy's job to control the high seas. In the Navy School Family Workshop, participants will get their sea legs as they learn some of the skills of basic seamanship including semaphore and naval flag signaling, knot tying, and navigation. Participants will also take part in a kid-friendly "Crossing The Line" ceremony to complete their journey from "Pollywog" learners to "Shellback" veterans.

Get to Know: Paul Gauguin. Travel to a tropical island with Paul Gauguin by drawing a still life of tropical fruit and then creating a colorful background with painted cut papers.

American Indian Heritage Week at the Louisiana Children's Museum
Where: Louisiana Children's Museum, 420 Julia St., New Orleans, La. 70130 
When: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM 
Who: Kids and their families 
How: Pay admission. 
Cost: $8.50 per person; children under 1 are free. Free for LCM members.

Celebrate American Indian Hertiage! Enter the Museum’s Starlab where you can gaze at nighttime constellations as you listen to American Indian constellation stories, use berries to creat a special paint and learn how American Indians used berries to paint houses, utensils, cedar boxes and faces. Play the Ring and Pin game and hear Indian music.
 
Second District Blues Festival - formerly Magazine Street Blues Festival
Where: Palmer Park - Uptown at the intersection of Carrollton and Claiborne  
When: 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM 
Who: Everyone! Very family friendly!

It's the 6th Annual Second Disrict Blues Festival benefitting COPS 2. A wonderful event for the whole family, including the 4-legged members. Special kids area! Don't miss music by Walter Wolfman Washington, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Mia Borderes plus The Pussyfooters and the Cherry Bombs. Arrive hungry because there's plenty of food: Crepes a la Cart, Woody's Fabulous Fish Tacos, Ninja, Plum Street Snoballs and more. Over 20 artists!

Oak Street PoBoy Fest 2014

Cost: Admission to the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival is free;

The 2014 Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, presented by Abita Brewery, features over 30 food vendors serving the best-tasting po-boys in New Orleans, two stages with live music, panel discussions covering the history of the po-boy and the Oak Street corridor, and a Family Fest held on the beautiful campus of St. Andrew's Episcopal School located at 8012 Oak Street @ Carrollton.

Ice Skating at Audubon Zoo
Where: Audubon Zoo by the Capital One Stage 
When: 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM 
Who: Everyone 
How: Just show up! All skaters will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to skating.  Guardians must sign for minors (those under 18 years of age on skate date). 
Cost: Admission to the rink is included with Zoo admission or Audubon membership.

Ice and snow are rare in New Orleans so Audubon Zoo is bringing in a rink of synthetic ice made from a high-tech plastic! Composed of engineered polymers that permit a skate blade to glide as smoothly as on real ice, the eco-friendly synthetic ice rink is made from a non-toxic, recyclable acrylic material. The Zoo will supply special skates for use at no additional fee. To add to the festivities, a DJ will be spinning holiday tunes, a sleigh will be available for photos and from 11:30am to 3:30pm Tinker Fairy and the Queen's Snowman will be available for meet and greets! Skating will be first come, first skate.
