St. Mary's Dominican High School

Believing Thinkers and Thinking Believers

By Sponsored October 13, 2016
St. Mary’s Dominican High School students are part of a 156-year legacy that traces its roots to a small group of Dominican sisters. In 1860 the sisters journeyed from Cabra, Ireland to Louisiana. Their vision laid the foundation for St. Mary’s Dominican High School, a leader of Catholic education in the region.

Eighth grade through senior year, Dominican students become vital members of a diverse community of critical thinkers, spiritual leaders and independent explorers. Rooted in “Veritas” – Truth – Dominican’s college-preparatory curriculum fosters a love of learning within the four pillars of prayer, study, community, and service. Through curriculum and instruction, faculty and student formation, Dominican forms its students into believing thinkers and thinking believers who engage in the school’s preaching mission.

Dominican’s STREAM™ initiative fosters creativity and innovation, weaving together the study of Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math. In the new Gayle and Tom Benson Science Technology Complex, the Science Wing has Chemistry Laboratories, Life Sciences classrooms, and a Science Research Laboratory. Dominican is the only high school in the nation with the SynDaver™, a sophisticated full-body surgical simulator used in Human Anatomy classes.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure provides students access to curriculum anywhere on campus when using their personal computing devices. In the Erminia Wadsworth|Azby Fund Technology Center, students synthesize academic content, produce original works, and practice ethical use of technology. The Disputatio Room is a dedicated area where students, faculty, alumnae, visiting educators, and professionals come together for in-depth discussions, integrating faith and reason.

At retreats, students experience spiritual growth, individually and as a class. Student-led daily prayers, joyful school liturgies and community service opportunities foster their spiritual growth and development. Student organizations offer opportunities to expand our students’ experience beyond the classroom.  Dominican competes in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball at the varsity, junior varsity and eighth-grade levels.
