June 23, 2016
June and July are blueberry picking months! With 5 farms within driving distance from New Orleans, a blueberry picking trip with your children is a must do this summer.

Picking your own berries is a really fun time for everyone in your family. Even the little ones can get in on the action. Besides just popping the delicious fruit right in your mouth, you can have a great time in the kitchen with your kids making blueberry smoothies, muffins, pie, cobbler, cookies, ice cream and more. You can also put it on your cereal or in your yogurt.

We all know blueberries taste good, but did you know they contain the most antioxidants of any fruit? Plus they have been proven to reduce DNA damage which helps to protect against aging and cancer!

A 1 cup serving (148 grams) of blueberries contains:

Fiber: 4 grams.
Vitamin C: 24% of the RDA.
Vitamin K: 36% of the RDA.
Manganese: 25% of the RDA.
Small amounts of various other nutrients.

Blueberries are also about 85% water, and an entire cup contains only 84 calories, with 15 grams of carbohydrates.

For the optimal picking experience, go in the early morning to avoid the extreme heat, wear sunscreen, and a hat. It's rained so much lately you should definitely wear your rubber boots.
